Who is F.M. Alexander?
Today we use the phrase 'The Alexander Technique'
To describe the body of work and principles that were first discovered and taught by Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955).
Alexander, an Australian-born, self-trained actor
Developed performance-related voice hoarseness, which the conventional medical treatment of the time could not alleviate.
On the aftermath of an important engagement
During which Alexander had almost completely lost his voice, having "faithfully carried out"1 his physician's previous instructions, Alexander asked his physician, "Is it not fair then...to conclude that it was something I was doing that evening in using my voice that was the cause of the trouble?"2 While Alexander's physician agreed with Alexander's reasoning, he could not point out the source of Alexander's trouble.
Then Alexander set about his inquiry
Of finding out what caused his trouble, and this inquiry became his life's work.
